These terms cover the Platesmith app for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android, its sync service, and this website. Platesmith is made and run by an independent developer based in South Australia, Australia ("we", "us"). By using Platesmith you agree to these terms and to the way we handle data in our privacy policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
The short version
- Platesmith is for adults aged 18 and over.
- It gives general training and nutrition guidance. It is not medical advice and does not replace a doctor, physiotherapist or dietitian.
- Check with a doctor before you start, especially if you have an injury, a medical condition, take medication, or are pregnant.
- Lifting weights and changing how you eat carry a real risk of injury. You choose what you do, how heavy you go and when to stop. Stop if something hurts.
- Platesmith is free, with an optional subscription, Platesmith Coach, that adds an AI coach. Both are provided as they are. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law still apply.
1. These terms
These terms are an agreement between you and us. If you got Platesmith from the App Store, Apple's standard licence agreement for apps also applies; if you got it from Google Play, Google Play's terms of service also apply. Section 13 explains how they fit together. If anything in these terms conflicts with a right you have by law, the law wins.
2. Age
You must be 18 or older to use Platesmith. The app asks for your date of birth when you start and stops anyone younger. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we will delete it.
3. Not medical advice
Platesmith gives general information about training and nutrition for healthy adults. That includes its programs, exercise instructions and cues, suggested weights and progressions, calorie and macro targets, training phases, calculators, articles and the health questions in the app. None of it is medical, physiotherapy, dietetic or other professional advice, and none of it is tailored to your health by a qualified person.
- Talk to a doctor before you start a new training or diet plan, and especially if you have a heart, lung, blood pressure or other medical condition, an injury or joint problem, take prescribed medication, are pregnant or have recently given birth, have ever had an eating disorder, or have been told to limit exercise.
- The optional health questions in the app can suggest checking with a doctor and make the app's advice gentler. They are a prompt, not a medical clearance. Answering "no" to all of them does not mean exercise is safe for you.
- Never ignore advice from a health professional, or put off getting it, because of something in Platesmith.
- If you have chest pain, faintness, severe shortness of breath or another emergency, stop and call 000 in Australia, or your local emergency number.
4. Training at your own risk
Strength training, cardio and changes to your diet carry risks, including strains, sprains, fractures, other injuries, illness and, rarely, death. These risks exist however carefully a program is written. By using Platesmith you accept that:
- you decide whether to do each workout, which exercises to do, how much weight to lift and how many reps to do. A program or a suggested weight is a starting point, not an instruction you must follow;
- you are responsible for learning safe technique, warming up, using a spotter or safety equipment where it's needed, and checking that your equipment and space are safe;
- you should stop an exercise straight away if it causes pain, dizziness or anything that feels wrong, and get help if it continues;
- exercise links open videos made by other people on YouTube. We don't make or check them, and they may not suit you.
We try to make Platesmith's guidance sensible and conservative, but we can't watch you train or know your health, so we can't promise that any program, weight or target is right or safe for you.
5. Nutrition and food data
- Calorie, protein, carb and fat targets are estimates from general formulas. Your real needs can differ. Large or long calorie deficits can be harmful; talk to a doctor or an accredited practising dietitian before a big change.
- Food details come from public databases (including Food Standards Australia New Zealand, the USDA and Open Food Facts) and from what users type in. They can be wrong or out of date. Never rely on Platesmith for allergens or ingredients. Always check the product's label.
- If tracking food makes you anxious or affects how you eat, stop using those features and talk to your doctor. In Australia, the Butterfly Foundation helpline is 1800 33 4673.
6. Coaches
You can choose to link Platesmith to a coach on Platesmith Coaching. Once linked, your coach can change your program, meal plan, phase and targets, and the app shows each change with a note. Coaching advice comes from your coach, not from Platesmith. Your coaching arrangement, including any payment, is between you and your coach, under the Platesmith Coaching terms. Everything in sections 3 to 5 applies just as much to plans a coach sets: you still decide what you do, and you can unlink at any time in Settings > Coach. The privacy policy says what your coach can see.
The AI coach
Platesmith Coach includes an AI coach that suggests a plan and explains it. Its suggestions are made by an AI model, so they are general guidance, can be wrong, and are not advice from a person. It only chooses between programs and phases Platesmith offers, and Platesmith's own rules set your calories, macros and weights, which you see before anything changes. Everything in sections 3 to 5 applies to its suggestions too. Don't type anything into it that you wouldn't want an AI provider to process; the privacy policy says what is sent. The AI coach is switched off while a human coach is linked.
7. Your account
- You can use Platesmith without an account. If you make one, keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us at support@platesmith.app if you think someone else has got into it.
- One account is for one person. Give accurate details when you set up the app, because your targets are worked out from them.
- You are responsible for what happens in your account, unless it's our fault.
8. Using Platesmith fairly
Please don't:
- try to get into anyone else's account or data, or into parts of our server you aren't meant to reach;
- overload, attack, probe or scrape the service, or get around its limits. If you find a security problem, email support@platesmith.app and we'll be glad to hear about it;
- copy, resell or republish Platesmith's programs, exercise library or app, or reverse engineer the app, except where the law allows it;
- use Platesmith for anything unlawful.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules. Except where there's a risk of harm or the law prevents it, we'll tell you first and give you a chance to export your data.
9. Your data
What you log in Platesmith is yours. You let us store, sync and process it only to run Platesmith for you, as the privacy policy explains. You can export it or delete your account from the app at any time. Keep your own backups of anything important: we take care of the server and back it up, but we can't promise that data will never be lost.
10. Platesmith's content
The app, its design, programs, exercise library, articles and this website belong to us or to the people who licensed them to us. We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use them for your own training while you follow these terms. Free and open data and software in Platesmith keep their own licences, listed in the app under Settings > Acknowledgements. Program names describe a style of training and don't suggest any link to other brands.
11. Free features, Platesmith Coach and changes
Platesmith's training and food tracking is free. Platesmith Coach is an optional subscription. On iPhone it is bought through the App Store:
- The app shows the price and the length of each plan before you subscribe. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm.
- If a free trial is offered, it turns into a paid subscription when it ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before.
- The subscription renews automatically at the same price and length unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can cancel or change it in the iPhone's Settings, under your name, then Subscriptions. Cancelling keeps it until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Refunds are handled by Apple, at reportaproblem.apple.com, under Apple's rules and your rights at law.
- Deleting your Platesmith account doesn't cancel the subscription with Apple; cancel it as above.
On Android it is bought through Google Play:
- The app shows the price and the length of each plan before you subscribe. Payment is charged to your Google Account when you confirm.
- If a free trial is offered, it turns into a paid subscription when it ends unless you cancel before then.
- The subscription renews automatically at the same price and length unless you cancel before the end of the current period. You can cancel or change it in the Play Store app, under Subscriptions. Cancelling keeps it until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Refunds are handled by Google under Google Play's refund policy and your rights at law.
- Deleting your Platesmith account doesn't cancel the subscription with Google; cancel it as above.
Each subscriber has a fair monthly allowance of AI coaching. If you reach it, the AI coach pauses until the next month and everything else keeps working.
Anything you already get for free won't silently become paid, and if we change Platesmith Coach's price, Apple or Google will tell you before it applies. We may add, change or remove features, and the sync service may sometimes be unavailable. If we ever close the sync service, we'll give you reasonable notice and a way to export your data first. The app keeps a full copy of your log on your phone and works offline.
12. Australian Consumer Law and liability
Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes those guarantees, or any other right or remedy that the law says can't be excluded, including any liability that by law can't be limited for death or personal injury, or for fraud. If you are a consumer in another country, the same applies to the mandatory rights you have there.
Subject to that:
- Platesmith is provided "as is" and "as available". We don't promise that it will be error-free, always available, or that its guidance will get you a particular result.
- To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any injury, illness, loss or damage that comes from your training, your diet, or relying on anything in Platesmith, given the risks you accept in sections 3 to 5. Nor are we liable for indirect or consequential loss, or loss of data you could have exported or backed up.
- To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for anything to do with Platesmith is limited to AUD $100.
13. Apple, Google and the app stores
If you use the app on an Apple device:
- These terms are between you and us only, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for the app and its content.
- Your licence lets you use the app on Apple devices you own or control, as Apple's Usage Rules allow.
- Apple has no obligation to provide support for the app. For help, contact us at support@platesmith.app.
- If the app fails to meet a warranty that applies to it, you can tell Apple, and Apple will refund the price you paid for it, if any. To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the app.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for dealing with any claim about the app, including product liability claims, claims that it doesn't meet a legal or regulatory requirement, consumer protection or privacy claims, and claims that the app infringes someone's intellectual property.
- You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on a US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the app, such as your mobile carrier's.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and, once you accept them, can enforce them against you.
Google Play
If you got the app from Google Play: these terms are between you and us only. Google is not a party to them and has no responsibility for the app, its content or support for it. For help, contact us at support@platesmith.app. Google Play's terms of service also apply to your download and to any subscription you buy there.
14. Stopping
You can stop using Platesmith whenever you like, and delete your account in the app under Settings > Account. Sections 3 to 5, 9, 10 and 12 keep applying after you stop.
15. Law, changes and contact
These terms are governed by the law of South Australia, Australia, and the courts there can hear any dispute. That doesn't take away your right, as a consumer, to rely on the mandatory laws of the place you live or to bring a claim there. Before going to court, please email us so we can try to sort it out.
If we change these terms, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters to you, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect. If you keep using Platesmith after that, the new terms apply.
If part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.
